So, the pension age is set to rise and people are working longer and longer. To add to the misery, pensions are facing drastic cuts, much to the fury of a tired and weary workforce. Many argue that it is a plight that faces only their country, blaming their own governments for failing older generations.

As true as this may be, its effect is not confined to any particular country and figures suggest a worldwide trend in the declining standards of the treatment of the ‘golden oldies.’

With such hardship, however, comes a sense of resilience and defiance. A unique and unifying sense of determination is spreading amongst the older generations, reminiscent of their baby boomer generation.

In employment, the statistics are stacked against you older folks (to any younger ones, remember that you too will grow old): rising rates of unemployment, decreased pay and lower living standards.

Cue the trumpets and the roll call of the brave. Those brave few who decide that their experience and skill is worth more than redundancy; those who believe that they have grown tired of being a ‘cog’ in the machine.

‘Why be the cog?’ questions my 59-year-old neighbour, David, ‘I want to be the engine!’ A wry smile spreads across his face as he divulges precious details about how he refused to bow to this uncomfortable trend.

Further to my post on eBooks last week I have come across a lot of people that are buying up eBooks and programs that promise that you can make a fortune online by simply filling out surveys. While it is possible to take surveys for money, you have to know how to do these things step-by-step.

I did a ‘step by step’ post a few weeks ago outlining the nuts and bolts of starting out taking surveys for money, but have still recieved a few messages asking me if it actually works.

Most of the companies I have joined that promise you will be making $20,000+ per month have been scams. But you can make money with paid surveys – you just need to know which companies have the highest payouts and the best resources for you.

Now, I want to share a little tip with you. The place you are going to make most of your money is by doing focus groups. Focus groups are where you call into a conference call and give opinions and thoughts about products and services. That is all there is to it. They are lengthy, but well worth the time investment. You can make anywhere from $50-$100 from just one focus group. I usually get one or two of these per month because they are not as common as regular surveys.

Now, how much can you really make doing surveys for money? This is totally up to you. Some of the surveys that have high payouts are pretty lengthy, so be prepared to answer a lot of questions. On average, for each survey you complete you will get around $15-$20. Some pay higher, and some pay less. On a monthly basis, if you do surveys 5 days a week, and do one focus group per month, you can realistically make anywhere from $1,500 to $2,000 if you do 5 surveys a day, 5 days a week. This is not bad for a few surveys each day, but if you don’t have that much time to commit to it – then yes – your payout will be lower.

So, does taking surveys for money really work? My answer is YES. If you know how to get quality surveys and know where to get them, you can easily earn about $1,000 per month.

Yes, you can get paid for taking surveys and earn money from home, but although you can, it does not follow that you always will.

In order for you to make money, paid surveys need to pay in a currency you can use. Although many survey companies will allow overseas residents to participate, they may only pay in one certain currency. If you don’t check to ensure that you get paid in your home currency, you may have to forfeit the earnings or pay a hefty bank fee in order to exchange an overseas check.

Although the best paid surveys allow payouts to be issued in local currency, not all sites are scam free. You may find that in the small print there is a clause stating that money can only be issued into a US bank account or as an Australian check. Whilst not precisely a scam, you may be unable to receive your payment.

A second possible swindle is when an advert says that you can get paid for taking surveys, and claim to make you rich. Once you have signed up, you discover that there are not enough surveys there to bother with.

Perhaps the survey provider only has four or five survey websites on its list, in which case you are likely to get paid to take surveys only once or twice a week at the most. If you are expecting to earn massive amounts of money by spending one or two hours per day answering questionnaires and giving your opinion, only to find you are only given one or two a week, this can be frustrating. In order to make money, paid surveys have to be available to take.

A similar scam occurs when a survey provider site promises plenty of surveys but ends up giving you everything but surveys. The best paid surveys take five to twenty minutes apiece and bring in a minimum of a pound each, often providing more than twenty pounds for one survey. This only mounts up to anything of value when you get paid for taking surveys at a rate of several per day. If the company only sends a couple each week and sends you a multitude of other offers instead, then you will not make money. Paid surveys are what you want, not buy one get one free coupons or earn $10 if you spend $50 offers.

To make sure you get plenty of the best paid surveys, you should make sure that the host site has multiple survey providers that it is connected to and that it will always have surveys for you to take available. If it deals with too few providers, you will not get paid to take surveys, but will waste your time waiting for them instead. One good idea is to sign up with a provider that asks you to sign in to their site to access various surveys available to you, rather than sending a daily email with links. Although the latter may seem to be more convenient, if it is a scam you will get lots of junk mail and no cash surveys. Reputable survey providers will have multiple survey companies on hand and will let you know this in their advertisement.
